Copy and Paste for Builders

The two moves you'll use constantly

Copy takes a selected piece of text and puts it on an invisible clipboard. Paste takes whatever is on that clipboard and inserts it wherever your cursor is. As an AI builder, you'll constantly copy AI-generated text out of the chat and paste it into an email, document, or another tool.

How to do it on any device

On a computer: select text with your mouse, then Ctrl+C (Windows) or Cmd+C (Mac) to copy, and Ctrl+V or Cmd+V to paste. On a phone: press and hold text to select it, tap "Copy", then press and hold in the destination box and tap "Paste". Many AI chat tools also have a small copy icon (๐Ÿ“‹) next to each response โ€” click that to copy the whole reply instantly.

A common beginner mistake

Copying only part of a response by accident (missing the last line) is extremely common. Always double-check by pasting into a blank space first and comparing it to what you meant to copy, especially for anything important like code or a final document.

Key Takeaways

  • Copy stores selected text on a clipboard; paste inserts it elsewhere.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+C copies, Ctrl/Cmd+V pastes on a computer; press-and-hold works on phones.
  • Most AI chat tools have a one-click copy icon next to each response.
  • Always double-check you copied the full text before pasting it somewhere important.

Copy and paste an AI reply

Ask ChatGPT or Claude for a short poem. Use the copy icon (or manual selection) to copy the whole reply, then paste it into a Notes app or a blank document.
